Undergraduate courses

  • Bachelor of Agricultural Science. The Bachelor of Agricultural Science is the most comprehensive of UQ’s range of agricultural programs, providing students with more opportunity to develop general or specialised expertise. A four year program it provides students with a sound knowledge of scientific, technological, management, economic, environmental and social principles associated with agriculture.
  • Bachelor of Agribusiness. The Bachelor of Agribusiness program is aimed at those wishing to establish a business career in the food and fibre industries. The program offers the ideal preparation for management positions with business, producing graduates who are consumer focussed, commercially aware, innovative, internationally orientated and technically competent. The program will provide you with an appreciation of the business principles which drive food and fibre industries, both nationally and internationally. You will learn about marketing, finance and managing the people and technology which link the producers of raw ingredients with manufacturers and finally consumers. You will study business courses such as accounting, economics, human resource management, marketing research and marketing; with specialist studies in the agricultural, environmental and food and fibre industry technologies. Through a wide range of elective courses you can further tailor your studies to your preferred career path.
  • Certificate in Agriculture, Queensland Certificate. The Queensland Certificate in Agriculture is unique, a complete educational program which allows for direct entry into the workforce or articulation into higher-level University or Vocational Educational systems with credit.The program is open to anyone wanting a career in the agriculture, horticulture or animal industries. No OP is required; just five sound level achievements in Year 10 (must include English, Maths and a Science Subject). Special entry is available for mature age students.


Postgraduate courses

  • Master of Rural Systems Management. The rural systems management program upgrades the knowledge and skills of professionals working in the rural and regional development area. Courses focus on practical work or community based training. Students develop a high level of knowledge and skills needed to work with individuals, groups and communities to analyse, plan, implement and evaluate community development programs and activities. They gain a thorough understanding of the theories and models of change and innovation as they apply in rural and regional settings.
  • Master of Agricultural Studies. The agricultural studies program provides knowledge and professional expertise in agriculture and related disciplines, including scientific and management principles and their integration. This broadly based, interdisciplinary program emphasises problem-solving skills, and advances students’ professional training and development. Students gain a conceptual basis and understanding of research techniques and data interpretation; and depth and breadth of understanding in a chosen field of study.
  • Master of Agribusiness. Agribusiness is the study of consumers, retailers, marketers, and primary producers – and the business of keeping the chain working profitably. This program meets the needs of three groups of professionals: those working in agribusiness who wish to upgrade their management skills; those wishing to redirect their careers into agribusiness; and new graduates in either business or agricultural/rural science wishing to add to their employment prospects. Students have opportunities to enhance their knowledge, skills and practice; to develop their careers; and to deliver better and more profitable outcomes for Australian agribusiness. Students learn to locate, interpret, synthesise and apply information from a variety of sources. Graduates demonstrate a high level of specialised knowledge of agribusiness management, and business and communication skills associated with selected areas of study.

Poultry research

The University of Queensland have 96 floor pens and 80 cages for broilers; free range, barn, traditional and environmental controlled systems for layers. We have NIRS, nitrogen and amino acid analysers, bomb calorimeter, freeze dryer and all equipment for nutritional and immunological research. Research areas are include:

  • protein and amino acid metabolism and nutrition
  • application of feed enzymes
  • NIRS
  • Mycotoxins and poultry production
  • Stress physiology and immune function
  • Layer hen housing and management
