The research and development program for the Australian egg industry is funded by a compulsory levy on hens producing eggs for commercial purposes. These funds are matched dollar-for-dollar by the Australian Government.
RIRDC is a statutory Corporation formed in July 1990 under the Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1989. It was set up by the Commonwealth Government to work closely with Australian rural industries on the organisation and funding of their research and development needs. This site includes RIRDC research projects on poultry feed and diets, welfare, diseases and health.
The Poultry CRC is a government and industry funded Cooperative Research Centre which conducts research and education activities to aid the development of the Australian Poultry Industry. It will run until July 2017. It has 3 research programs:

CSIRO is involved in scientific research and development in all Industry sectors. Their work and organisational structure is aimed at addressing the specific needs of these sectors. CSIRO offers industries a range of services including research and development, advice and testing. The ACMF is the peak coordinating body for participants in the chicken meat industry in Australia. The Federation is responsible for the co-ordination of the various activities of the State Chicken Meat Councils and makes recommendations to the Councils on matters concerning the industry as a whole. The Queensland Egg Farmers Association represents all contract egg farmers in Queensland. The website includes information on egg farming facts, production statistics, hen welfare issues, caged bird egg production, speciality eggs in Queensland including free range, barn, vegetarian and organic eggs.
The Victorian Farmers Federation comprises over 230 local branches with in excess of 21,000 members who together form an active, powerful lobby group working toward advancing farming in Victoria. New Zealand and Australia have similar Codes of Practices. The Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand represents the interests of almost all of the poultry processing and poultry breeding companies in NZ. A major role for PIANZ is the maintenance of current quarantine standards to protect their status as the healthiest country in the world to raise poultry. The Poultry Research and Teaching Unit is a cross-departmental group of UNE staff with a common interest in avian biology, poultry production, disease, behaviour and product marketing. Its mission is to provide a centre of excellence in research and teaching that will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the poultry industry in Australia. They have excellent research and analytical facilities for work in disease, egg quality, nutrition and production aspects of broiler and laying poultry.
