DEEDI poultry research
Increasing consumption of poultry meat combined with improvements in the genetics of poultry birds and processing efficiencies have contributed to the strong growth of Queensland's poultry industry. DEEDI is working with the industry to sustain its profitability and its production of safe, wholesome products.
Microbiology
Extensive culture collection that includes formal type strains of most bacterial pathogens of poultry and food-borne pathogens associated with poultry. Extensive culture collection of Australian field isolates of bacterial pathogens of poultry and food-borne pathogens associated with poultry. Fully equipped bacteriology research laboratories with major emphasis on both conventional and DNA-based methodologies. Laboratories are AQIS approved at PC-2 level. AQIS and OGTR approved PC-1 and PC-2 level animal facilities.
Parasitology
Extensive collection of field isolates for all seven major species of poultry Eimeria. Fully equipped parasitology, immunology, tissue culture and biotechnology research laboratories. Laboratories are AQIS & OGTR approved at PC-2 level. AQIS and OGTR approved PC-1-3 level animal facilities.
Environment
The Sustainable Intensive Systems unit specialises in researching the environmental issues for intensive livestock production. They have groups who specialise in waste management, soil and nutrient research and air quality research. Mark Dunlop is a part of the air quality research group. The air quality group has a dynamic olfactometer (to measure the strength of odours), a gas chromatograph -mass spectrometer - olfactometer (GC-MS-O) and specialised sampling equipment including wind tunnels, isolation flux chambers and other assorted air sampling equipment. Jae Ho Sohn is developing an electronic odour detection system. The odour, soil and waste analytical laboratory has the following facilities:
- Modern grinding mills, equipped with dust extraction facilities to meet Work Place Health and Safety requirements and environmental considerations for the processing of plant matter and soils.
- Fan forced and microwave ovens for gravimetric moisture content determination.
- Controlled temperature and humidity incubators.
- Shakers for sample processing.
- Fume cabinet for handling toxic chemicals.
- Chemical storage facilities.
- Chemically inert benches and sinks.
- Laboratory services including vacuum and compressed air.
