Project Title: Development of the environmental program

Project Leader: Ian Farran (Project 03-29)

Duration of Project: Now completed (28 August 2003 to 31 March 2004)

Project overview

There is a need to objectively review the previous environmental research projects carried out in Australia and overseas in relation to:

  • odour and dust measurements;
  • odour and dust reduction technologies;
  • odour and dust dispersion modelling;
  • pathogen transfer and risk assessment;
  • value-adding to waste products;
  • environmental management systems; and
  • environmental performance.

This project is about developing environmental management research programs in consultation with poultry farmers, poultry processing companies, planners, industry regulators and a team of multi-disciplinary researchers and change consultants.

Project progress

Two review documents: Review of Modelling, Emission Measurement and Treatment of Odour and Dust Emissions from Broiler Farms by Tim Pollock, GHD Pty Ltd; and Public Health Risks from Use of Waste Products from Australian Poultry Industries by Pat Blackall, DPI&F Queensland have been published as CRC reports. A number of environmental workshops have been conducted involving researchers and industry representatives.
