Position(s)
- Lecturer, University of New England (UNE)
- Project Leader for Poultry CRC Project 06-18: Role of voluntary litter consumption by broiler chickens on gut function and gut health
Qualifications
- PhD, The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, Denmark, Title of PhD-project: Fructo-oligosaccharides and trans-galactooligosaccharides as prebiotics for piglets at weaning: Effect on the intestinal microbial ecosystem with emphasis on the population of bifidobacteria
Areas of expertise
- My research work includes studies on the composition and activity of the microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract of domestic animals, mainly in pigs, but in recent years in broiler chickens. The aim of the work is to improve animal growth and gastrointestinal health without the use of antibiotic growth promoters. This is attempted by investigating how various feeding strategies and feed additives affect the microbial ecosystem in the gastrointestinal tract and interact with animal performance, digestion of the feed, the health of the animals and development of zoonotic bacteria, such as Salmonella.
