Undergraduate Courses
- PO 3011 Freshman Seminar Course objectives include: Evaluating incoming poultry majors so that deficiencies can he addressed before they become major problems. Expose the students to issues and situations that they will face if they are employed in the poultry industry.
- P0 3021/4031/4041 POULTRY SEMINAR Course objective: After completing this three course series you will be able to prepare and present effective oral presentations. You will become more effective, confident, and comfortable while speaking to an audience.
- PO 3313 COMMERCIAL POULTRY PRODUCTION Familiarize the student with the poultry industry, past and present, and introduce the student to the basic concepts of poultry that will be covered in depth in other poultry science courses.
- PO 3323 POULTRY JUDGING A three hour course designed to teach students to effectively judge chickens and grade their products by working with chickens and their products and by competing judging contests.
- PO 3333 ADVANCED POULTRY JUDGINGA three hour course designed to teach students to effectively judge chickens and grade their products by working with chickens and their products and by competing in judging contests.
- PO 3834 Microbiology of Food Animal Production Course focuses on the unique aspects of microbiology associated with the production and processing of food animals. It includes aseptic technique, culturing and identification of microorganisms, common staining methods.
- PO 4324/6324Avian Reproduction Avian reproductive physiology and its application to management of poultry for maximum reproductive performance will be discussed. Reproductive characteristics of several different species of birds will be examined; however, the broiler breeder will serve as the major discussion topic.
- P0 4423/6423 FEED MANUFACTURING Two hours lecture. Two hours laboratory. Mill design and equipment; procurement, storage and quality control for ingredients and complete feeds; formulation of practical type poultry rations.
- P0 4523Commercial Broiler Processing Techniques Three hours lecture. Study of preparation of live broiler chickens for retail sales, including all pertinent technology, product flow, equipment and applicable regulations.
- PO 4833/6833 POULTRY ANATOMY Welcome to the anatomy lab. We have made every effort to ensure that you learn something and also that you enjoy the time spent here. An outline and calendar of the lab exercises is attached. Please read ahead and be prepared when you come to class.
- NTR 8123 Methods In Nutrition Research Fall semester. (Prerequisites: NTR 8114 and ST 8114 or equivalent). Two hours lecture. Three hours laboratory. Application of analytical methods used in research techniques; practice in writing research proposals, conducting a research project, and preparing research findings suitably for scientific publication.
Postgraduate Courses
- Master of Science Options: Thesis (24 hours of coursework), or non-thesis (30 hours of coursework; may include directed research project as part of coursework if desired).
Research
The Poultry Science Department is actively involved with research in many different arenas under the authority and direction of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES). MAFES was mandated by the U.S. Congress and the Mississippi Legislature for the purpose of conducting scientific research in agriculture, forestry and related sciences. When the Poultry Science Department was established in 1946, the faculty scientists assumed the responsibility for conducting research that increases the scientific knowledge related to poultry and poultry production.
