Litter & cages
By Jayden Miell and Kim Wanke
It is important to have the correct bedding for poultry to assist with good hygiene to keep them healthy.
Following are suitable materials for litter in a cage:
- Sawdust
- Straw
- Lawn clippings
- Shredded paper
Important things to remember are:
- You only put as much sawdust or straw in to cover the ground of the cage for small chooks. But for big chooks you put in an extra layer.
- You usually put disinfectant in the cage before the bedding goes in, so the chook doesn’t get sick.
- When the cage has got lots of chook manure in it you clean it out and put fresh sawdust or straw in. Other wise you clean the cage regularly every 1-2 weeks.
