Receive formal recognition for your acquired knowledge and skills! Several people from the poultry industry have been sponsored by the Poultry CRC to go through the process of recognition of prior learning (RPL). Many people in the Australian poultry industry have acquired extensive knowledge and experience through working on the job. People who are more interested in practical things and who like working with animals often go straight from high school into the poultry industry. There is a mechanism for formal recognition of these skills and knowledge through the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) the national framework which sets the standards for qualifications which are recognised all across Australian and around the world. The definition of RPL is to facilitate pathways to formal qualifications that are based on, or include, prior learning that has occurred outside formal education and training. Details of the national principles and operational guidelines for recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be found here.

Objectives of the policy principles and operational guidelines

These principles and operational guidelines have been developed to provide advice at the national level about RPL, and to guide the four sectors of post compulsory education and training (senior secondary school, adult and community education, vocational education and training and higher education) to develop RPL policies and procedures that ensure:

  • opportunities for Australians to have their non-formal and informal learning recognised and counted towards a qualification
  • diverse and inclusive pathways to lifelong learning
  • consistency in the principles used in implementing RPL within sectors and between sectors
  • the quality, integrity and standing of Australian qualifications

What to do if you are interested in undertaking RPL

Contact the Poultry CRC Education Coordinator, Dr. Julie Roberts at: Australian Poultry CRC, PO Box U242, University of New England, Armidale, NSW 2351. Julie will then tell you more about the process and assess your eligibility for Poultry CRC support for the process. She will then put you in contact with an appropriate person from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The representative from the RTO will then make an appointment with you to meet with you, at your workplace or elsewhere. The RTO representative will then work with you and your workplace supervisor to establish the credit that you can receive for your knowledge and experience and what you may need to do to complete all the requirements for a qualification (Certificate or Diploma).
