Project overview

The significance and implications of digesta reflux in poultry have not been previously tested and it is not known if the process varies with dietary and other management factors. The occurrence of reflux in poultry may influence how nutrients are used and affect bird health.

Project objectives

  1. Establish the occurrence of reflux in broilers and layers;
  2. Evaluate the effects of different dietary factors; and
  3. Assess the implications of reflux on nutrient utilisation and health of chickens.

Project progress

This project has been completed and the Final Report is available from the Poultry CRC (ISBN: 1 921010 03 7).

The confirmation of reflux in chickens may lead to new treatments for pathogenic bacteria possessing the ability to undertake reverse movement in the gut or the cloacal application of health products in specialised flocks (breeders for example).
