Title: Eimeria vaccines

Project Leader: Robin Gasser at UM and Bioproperties funded by Poultry CRC (Project 03-15)

Duration of Project: Now completed (1 January 2004 to 31 December 2006)

Contents

Project overview

Caused by seven different species of the protozoan parasite, genus Eimeria, coccidiosis in poultry represents an intestinal disease of major worldwide economic importance. This project focussed on the sustainable control of coccidiosis in poultry via vaccination and improved molecular diagnosis and monitoring.

Project objectives

  • Improve approaches for the production and in vitro storage of commercial vaccines; and
  • Develop improved methods for the diagnosis and surveillance of coccidiosis via genetics.

Project progress

This project has been completed and the Final Report is available from the Poultry CRC (ISBN: 1 921010 04 5).

The results have been successfully transferred to industry. In particular, Eimeria Pty Ltd has adopted the improved methods for the freezing and storage of Eimeria vaccines. In addition, a highly sensitive and specific technique developed for the diagnosis of coccidiosis (the disease caused by species of Eimeria) is now being used to gain accurate insights into the disease process.
