Skills for the Future is a set of major new initiatives, announced by the Prime Minister on 12 October 2006. These initiatives, worth $837 million over five years, will focus on the need for continuous upgrading of skills over the course of an individual’s working life.
From January 2007, if you are 25 years or older you can apply for a voucher for up to $3,000 to complete Year 12 or enrol in a vocational Certificate II course.
From July 2007, if you are a worker 30 years or older, wage subsidies of up to $150 a week will be made available to take up an Australian Apprenticeship.
If you want to go further you can also start or upgrade your qualifications to Diploma or Advanced Diploma level, particularly in engineering skills.
For more information on these and other Skills for the Future initiatives, please see the fact sheets below.
Who is eligible for a Work Skills Voucher?
If you are 25 years or older, without a Year 12 certificate (or equivalent) or certificate level II (or higher) qualification and you fall into one of the below groups then you may be eligible to receive a Work Skills Voucher.
- You are an unskilled worker wishing to acquire qualifications;
- You are an income support recipient, such as a parent or carer wishing to return to the workforce and are facing active job search requirements in the next two years;
- You are an unemployed job seeker in receipt of income support and participating in the Job Network and undertaking an active job search;
- You are not in the labour force, either voluntarily or because of carer responsibilities, and intend to seek work after achieving your qualification
The Federal Government also support training initiatives for pre vocational training – that is, training programs offered to increase skill level and knowledge prior to being offered employment.
