The University of Melbourne is an Essential Participant in the Poultry CRC and researchers at UM are participating in several Poultry CRC research projects.

The School of Veterinary Science

The School of Veterinary Science operates from two campuses at Parkville and Werribee. The Parkville Campus is a Veterinary Preclinical Centre, conducting teaching and researching in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, pathology, parasitology, microbiology and animal biotechnology. The Werribee Campus is a Veterinary Clinical Centre providing clinical instruction to students and veterinary services to the local community through its Veterinary Clinic and Hospital. The first and second years of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree course are taught at Parkville, while the third and fourth years are taught at Werribee.

Asia Pacific Centre for Animal Health (APCAH)

The Asia Pacific Centre for Animal Health (APCAH) is a part of the School of Veterinary Science at UM. It contains research and technical groups and currently undertakes projects in the areas of microbiology, molecular biology, immunology and vaccine technology, as well as conducting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, with students undertaking PhD, MVS, MVSc and MVS (Avian health) courses. APCAH has five separate PC2 laboratories for molecular biology, virus, tissue and bacterial culture, PCR and gel electrophoresis, and cold room, warm room and dark rooms. It has access to shared core equipment including high-speed centrifuges and ultra-centrifuges. The animal house facility of APCAH is accredited by NATA, OGTR, NRA and AQIS. It contains 39 isolators, equipment such as incubators, and infection chambers, and is in close proximity to facilities for gross and microscopic pathological examination at the Veterinary Clinical Centre at Werribee. Our laboratory has skills in production of recombinant proteins for diagnostic purposes and has won prizes for commercialisation of diagnostic antigens. The centre provides a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited reference diagnostic laboratory, the School provides a fast and cost effective diagnostic service and epidemiological analysis of major poultry diseases for the Australian poultry industries.
