University of New England
From Poultry Hub
The University of New England was the first Australian university established outside a capital city and is an Essential Participant in the Poultry CRC (and home to the CRC's headquarters). The School of Environmental and Rural Science possesses sophisticated poultry research facilities, runs courses in poultry science and supports several researchers.

Undergraduate courses
- The Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Business is unique in providing a degree combination that is ideally suited to the demands of modern agri-business; the capacity to run a business and to also have the technical knowledge to be able to provide advice and services to the agricultural community. UNE is well equipped to provide such training as this combined degree brings together the expertise of groups who have a long and successful history in teaching in these areas. Likewise the rural location of UNE means that these areas are taught by staff who have close links to the industries that may be employers in the future. UNE also provides flexible delivery of the course content which means that there is the option of studying in distance mode and 'training on the job'.
- Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Laws. This double degree program examines the principles and practices modern rural industries and their intersection with the legal system; development of scientific and legal reasoning and inquiry; and critical analysis of complex circumstances. It will provide the skills, working individually and as part of a team, to apply these developing skills to current and future problems especially at interface of agricultural business, science, economics and law. The legal qualification meets the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner in all Australian States and Territories.
- Bachelor of Agriculture. This degree produces graduates with skills in increasing demand in the rural sector. A practical orientated degree, students are provided with the tools necessary to understand the implications of land use and management change on agricultural productivity. Once armed with the basic knowledge to understand agricultural systems, graduates are able to continue on to further study in specific areas of interest. This degree suits students who are more interested in management of agricultural landscapes in contrast to the scientific, agricultural systems focus of other agricultural based degree programs offered at UNE. The major completed will appear on the academic record and testamur.
- Bachelor of Livestock Science. As climatic conditions change, increasing proportions of marginally arable country will be sown to pasture. Graduates who understand the nutritional needs of livestock, selection for better performing animals and production of pastures needed to optimise economic and environmental outcomes will be in strong demand. This is the only Livestock Science degree in Australia and places emphasis on producing graduates who understand livestock systems and end products, from feedlots through to extensive grazing systems. Graduates will be capable of meeting the future challenges of livestock industries through strong scientific and industry knowledge and excellent communication skills.
- Bachelor of Rural Science. Providing food and fibre for growing populations in Australia and worldwide in a challenging climatic environment demands graduates capable of understanding and integrating whole agricultural systems. This degree produces graduates with the scientific and communication skills and confidence to solve practical agricultural problems at farm, catchment and national level.
- Diploma in Agriculture. This course has the general aim of providing a formal academic qualification for people who wish to obtain training at the tertiary level in some area of agriculture, without the need to commit themselves to a full degree program. It is an ideal program for those who need to undertake a refresher course in a particular discipline, or who wish to broaden their knowledge, or who perhaps simply wish to satisfy their curiosity.
Postgraduate courses
- The Graduate Certificate in Rural Science is the first award level of a fully articulated program which gives qualified applicants the opportunity for study at progressive levels: Graduate Certificate in Rural Science, Graduate Diploma in Rural Science; Master of Agriculture or Master of Science in Agriculture.
- The Graduate Diploma in Rural Science is the second award level of a fully articulated program which gives qualified applicants the opportunity for study at progressive levels: Graduate Certificate in Rural Science, Graduate Diploma in Rural Science; Master of Agriculture or Master of Science in Agriculture. The Graduate Diploma is Rural Science is designed to give graduates an opportunity to undertake specialised study in an area of agriculture.
- The Master of Agriculture s a course work only program designed for students who wish to broaden their knowledge in an area of agriculture and who do not wish to complete a research project.
- The Master of Science in Agriculture is a program of course work and research designed to provide advanced training to supplement a first degree and to provide an introduction to research. The course work component is designed to provide advanced knowledge, and to develop a range of skills, applicable to the candidate's background and area of interest. Areas of specialisation are: animal science; meat science and technology; wool science; genetics and animal breeding; agricultural and resource economics; agronomy and soil science.
- The Professional Doctorate in Science is designed for graduates with appropriate experience in industry/research/teaching and is designed to: provide a breadth of knowledge to allow interpretation and application of research within a professional or industrial or commercial context; provide research experience with a professional and applied focus making a significant contribution to professional practice, and to a lesser extent, to an area of knowledge; to produce critical consumers of research with a good understanding of the research process, research policies and strategies, and a knowledge of the relationship between research and professional practice.
Poultry Research and Teaching Unit (PRATU)
PRATU is a cross-departmental group of UNE staff with a common interest in avian biology, poultry production, disease, behaviour, environmental management and product marketing. Its mission is to provide a centre of excellence in research and teaching that will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the poultry industry in Australia. We have excellent research and analytical facilities for work in disease, egg quality, nutrition, production and environmental aspects of both broilers and layers.Publications

Teaching
PRATU is involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This includes a number of animal production reading units (ANPR 527; ANPR 528); applied animal nutrition (ANPR 300/500); animal production units (e.g., PLTY 300 and PLTY 301). Our staff also teach animal health and disease units as well as other animal production units which cover some of the other poultry related topics.
