Biologically Active Molecule Delivery

29th Jun 2011

Developing effective delivery of biologically active molecules to the maturing egg embryo is the focus of research being undertaken by Dr Tim Mahony at The University of Queensland. This is a collaborative project (sub-project 1.3.2) between the Poultry CRC, The University of Queensland and DAFF (formerly DEEDI). “During the first round Australian Poultry CRC, we were focused on the development of a new more

Net Energy system for the Australian chicken meat industry

06th Jun 2011

Previous work done on Net Energy, namely Frap et al in 1940’s, has largely not been followed up in poultry. This has been primarily due to the practical challenges faced in setting up such facilities. However, with the ever increasing cost of feed, any gain in energy efficiencies or feed conversion efficiencies will pay direct dividends to

Manipulating betaine content in eggs

01st Jun 2011

The large scale incubation of fertile eggs in the commercial broiler and layer industry is difficult to manage, particularly keeping an even, ideal temperature for each individual egg. Temperature variation and fluctuation does occur in commercial incubators, and can cause major problems with embryo development and survival. As one of the most powerful osmolytes in

Industry Transferable Ideas

03rd May 2011

Welcome to another edition of eChook! Industry transferable ideas focus of Call for Proposals. Currently, the Poultry CRC’s research is dominated by long-term, blue sky projects, tackling some of the most difficult questions faced by the poultry industry globally. However, it is equally important to help industry solve its immediate challenges. The Poultry CRC’s August

Litter Composting and Viral Pathogen Survival. With an increasing cost of litter material coupled with an increase in public awareness of litter re-use issues (particularly pathogen load), the poultry industry is challenged on how to best manage this potential resource. Effect of incubation on leg strength

28th Mar 2011

Temperature and humidity during egg incubation can affect the long-term leg strength of fast growing meat chickens (broilers). A recent study at The University of Sydney, funded by the Poultry CRC, examined the impact from two differing sets of incubation conditions on early growth rate, bone composition and leg weakness measurements in a pure line broiler breed.
