Litter and Bedding

Litter & cages

By Jayden Miell and Kim Wanke

Following are suitable materials for litter in a cage:

  • Sawdust

    A cage with fresh litter
  • Straw
  • Lawn clippings
  • Shredded paper

Important things to remember are:

  • You only put as much sawdust or straw in to cover the ground of the cage for small chooks. But for big chooks, you put in an extra layer.
  • You usually put disinfectant in the cage before the bedding goes in, so the chook doesn’t get sick.
  • When the cage has got lots of chook manure in it you clean it out and put fresh sawdust or straw in. Otherwise, you clean the cage regularly every 1-2 weeks.
